Getting ready to trim the tree? How about using LED (light emitting diode)bulbs this year? Compared to conventional holiday lights, LED bulbs use 80-90% less energy, do not generate heat so they do not pose a fire risk, and last for 20 years.

I always look forward to the holiday season. Part of that enjoyment is buying the Christmas tree and decorating it. This year though, I grappled with an eco dilemma - a real tree or a fake tree? Of course, I'm more inclined to buy the true blue (or perhaps true green) Christmas tree. But my husband pointed out that artificial trees can be used year after year, unlike the live trees. Sounded reasonable to me too. Now what? Thankfully, I came across this article entitled "Oh Christmas tree, oh green Christmas tree?" courtesy of Yahoo! Green. So now, we will buy our fresh Christmas tree from a nearby Christmas tree farm. Good thing we started checking out the local farms near our town just this weekend. I forgot to ask, though, about integrated pest management. But we still have time.

According to Ideal Bite, if you buy coffee everyday in disposable cups, you are creating about 23 lbs of waste annually. And you're not just getting coffee: styrofoam disrupts your hormones, and the chlorine used to bleach paper containers creates carcinogens. So bring your own reusable containers. Some cafes apparently even offer discounts to people who bring their own travel mugs.

From Ideal Bite: You can be energy-conscious and raise money for good causes when you search online. Goodsearch donates 50% of revenues to a charity of your own choosing. Catch Tomorrow raises funds for public schools in your state. Blackle's black background uses less energy than the traditional white. If you want more color, the appropriately named The Green Spider might be for you. Green Maven only pulls results from green websites.

As the holidays approach, I encourage everyone to make wishlists. We all receive gifts that we don't want or need and end up having to return it to the store. That uses energy, not to mention our precious time. Otherwise we end up keeping these gifts at home in case the giftgiver stops by and looks for it. If you really want to minimize returns, specify your size, color preference and other specs. Of course another option is to donate these unwanted or unusable presents, or (horror of horrors!), re-gift them. I am a proud re-gifter. I have an Amazon wishlist. The Things I want is a universal wishlist. For environment-friendly gift registries, try New American Dream.

Turkeys are the centerpiece of any Thanksgiving dinner, and once upon a time, nobody thought twice about or had any issues with buying a hefty turkey. Today, it's more important than ever to make environmentally friendly food choices, and Turkey Day can greatly increase the United States' carbon footprint. Slate's The Green Lantern has some fine recommendations to make when it comes to buying eco-friendly turkey.

From Greenpeace: Two electric-powered Jeepneys or E-Jeepneys will start plying Makati City's streets today as part of a pilot testing phase to fine tune the innovative transport's adaptability as a commercial public transport in the country's premier business district. The E-Jeepneys, presented to the public in a press launch in the city last July 4 by the Makati City Government, Green Independent Power Producer (GRIPP), and Greenpeace, will now follow a daily route within Bel-Air Village going to Rockwell Center, picking up passengers hourly for two months as part of its longer commercial and technical testing. A stellar idea, but I hope this will not just be confined exclusively to those places. It's a nice start, but I think it's much better to get the message out to a wider portion of Metro Manila.

Worn-out shoes? Instead of buying new ones, you can bring them to a local cobbler to put in new heels or soles. Repairing them uses up less material than making a whole new pair. Same thing with clothes. Just bring them to a tailor or dry-cleaning place that makes alterations. Nike has a Reuse-a-Shoe program that accepts any brand of athletic shoes for recycling. Or you can send gently-used footwear to needy people in other countries through OneWorldRunning.

If you live in a major city and a)do not have a car or b)don't use your car everyday or c)just need a car every so often, then Carsharing is for you. With carsharing, people drive less. They found that people start exhibiting eco-friendly behaviors such as using mass transit and decreased car ownership. Less cars=less non-recyclable waste when cars get scrapped. Probably the best benefit is less road rage.

I got my credit card bill from Banco de Oro today, and after cringing at my expenses, I then cringed at all the things they stuff in the envelope. Three of the smaller items are actually booklets outlining more of their offerings. The bigger pieces are the statements themselves. I don't understand why there has to be two of those. One page is all you need to pay for your bill. The other one is just an extra which contains more ads at the bottom. Wasteful!

We bought new thermal curtain panels from Target (two panels at $20 each). They're supposed to keep the room warm so you save on your heating bills. So far, it's doing a good job keeping our room dark, but warm? Yet to be seen or felt. It's machine washable too.

If you're like me, you probably have an ever-growing collection of CDs, DVDs and books. CDs and DVD cases are made from hard to recycle PVC (polyvinyl chloride). Most books are made from non-recycled paper and petroleum-based inks. Watch movies and television shows for free by borrowing from the library instead of purchasing them. You can save oil, paper and plastic by heading over to your local library .

My sisters and I all caught a bug during our vacation. I'm loads better now; seems like I only got sick in sympathy with them! As tribute to our illness, I found this neat tip to help ease the sniffles, care of Care2. Air fresheners and disinfectants are no-no’s for good quality indoor air (see Green Living at Care2 for more). But, hark, listen to this: The therapeutic effects of diffused essential oils on the respiratory system are especially helpful during the cold and flu season because the diffused oils destroy airborne bacteria in the home. By using a diffuser, it is possible to dispense a therapeutic aromatherapy treatment to a number of people simultaneously.

I've never been to a supermarket that lets its customers pay for the plastic bags. Imagine my surprise when we went to Billa. Of course, we paid for only one bag. It taught us to limit our purchases, otherwise, we'd lug our purchases in our arms. I read somewhere that they charge you again if you reuse your plastic bag. Hopefully not.

We stayed at the Hotel Ibis Praha Old Town in Prague. As part of an air/hotel package, we had no clue that Ibis Hotels were environmentally-friendly. We discovered it on our own. The rooms were small, but adequate. It showcased an efficient use of space, coupled with minimalist design and layout. Very Ikea. What they have: wall-mounted shampoo & shower gel dispenser drinking glasses near the bathroom sink shelves and custom benches curtain panels wall-mounted lighting fixtures two bath towels What they don't have: little bottles of shampoo, conditioner & body lotion plastic cups and ice bucket cabinets, night stands and armoires minibar daily complimentary newspapers vending machines per floor What's more, they also have pet-friendly rooms (not that we needed them for this trip). Today, I decided to check out their website. A-ha! No wonder. The picture here was exactly how our room looked like. Mind you, we came across a lot of business travelers. It's not a bad place to stay. In fact, it's probably one of the best places we've stayed at ever.

Picture it: sitting by the fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate and a book as snow falls outside. Cozy isn't it? It would even be better if you have an eco-fireplace or use logs that are made from sustainable materials. The eco-friendly options burn longer and do not contain petroleum byproducts. Ideal bite says that if 10,000 people burn a new Duraflame log instead of a similarly sized piece of wood for an hour, we can avert the amount of carbon monoxide produced by driving a car for 1,675,000 mi.

Apparently not all plastic is bad. Plastic as in credit cards, that is. There are credit cards like the World Wildlife Fund Visa, MasterCard Earth Rewards and Working Assets Visa that will donate to charities or carbon offsetters with every purchase. Check with your credit card company to see if you can earn rewards for worthy causes. Then maybe you won't feel so guilty next time you shop till you drop.

Eco-hairspray! No more steel aerosol cans, chemicals that wash down the drain or cancer-causing by-products. Hello recyclable bottles and organic ingredients. Aveda offers the Witch hazel hairspray, Origins has the Ain't misbehavin brand. If you want to cook up something yourself, here's a tip from Ideal bite: Combine two cups of water with the juice of one organic lemon (or orange for dry hair) in a saucepan and simmer until it boils. Cool and strain the mixture, then pour into a spray bottle. Apply to hair and voila!
